I often install + paint, leaving you with a finished product to enjoy. My paint suggestion for wainscot is Benjamin Moore Regal in Eggshell finish. This is the same paint I use for painting walls. It's got only a smidge of sheen to it and is durable enough to scrub. Perfect for wainscot and feature walls.
There are so many ways to add interest to your walls - from shiplap to rustic wooden planks. Painted or stained. Run horizontal or vertical. This is one of those scenarios when pictures are worth a thousand words, so I'll let you take a scroll through the galleries below for ideas.
The most popular wainscot styles I install are simple panels (board + batten); raised panels with inset panel moulding; and panel moulding without the added panels. You'll see these in the galleries below.
I essentially always work with MDF (medium density fibreboard) instead of wood, for several reasons: its pine alternative bleeds knots through paint despite many of my best efforts; MDF is easier to work with and provides a smooth surface with no wood grain; and MDF is more economical to purchase. Often panel mouldings are either poplar or pine (which is sure to be well-primed with a quality stain blocking primer).
We can talk about which material and what size/scale would best suit your space and style.
Time to add some personality to your walls? Who doesn't love a beautiful wainscotted staircase? So. Classic. Shiplap mudrooms or foyers. Board + Batten simplicity or panel moulded elevations. So many gorgeous options to update your home and add loads of character.
